About the Show

The Cocktail Hour is a witty comedy set in the 1970s about a successful playwright who returns to his upper-class family home in upstate New York. During a pre-dinner cocktail hour, he seeks his parents’ blessing to produce a new play that is heavily based on them. His conservative parents are horrified by the exposure, creating family conflict and long-buried revelations.

Born in Buffalo, New York, A.R. Gurney (1930–2017) spent his life writing about the world he knew best: upper-middle-class East Coast families. With a lot of heart and plenty of humor, his plays show these traditional families trying to figure out their places as the world rapidly changed around them.
